Watchman

What is a watchman? A person whose job it is to watch and guard property at night or when the owners are away; A person who keeps watch: Guard Who are Watchmen?

Generally when we hear the name watchman we think of a security guard or night watchman. In the sense of the word these definitions are correct, but there are additional usages for this term. Someone who watches for something or someone to come or happen would also be considered a watchman. There are no specifics as to who can or cannot be a watchman. They only requirement is that you watch and report or take action if something occurs that you are set in place to watch, protect or report.

Different levels of Watchmen
The bible speaks of watchmen throughout the Old Testament. History also speaks of watchmen who were placed in different cities along a countries border to watch for coming conquers. God called some of His prophets watchmen. Ezekiel 3:17 says;

Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore hear a word from My mouth, and give them warning from Me.

They were to give a warning concerning the way the people were living and what judgements would be coming if they did not change their ways. In some places they were just called to watch what was approaching a city. II Samuel 8:24; Now David was sitting between the two gates. And the watchman went up to the roof over the gate, to the wall, lifted his eyes and looked, and there was a man, running alone.

In all cases the watchman was there to warn and protect that which he was in trusted with. Just like the watchman in the bible we are also called to be watchmen. We may think that we are not called to be a watchmen. That it is the job for Jesus Christ or the Holy Spirit to be our watchmen. That would be a wrong assumption on our part. Yes they watch over us and will protect us but we are to be the watchmen of our lives and our soul. Luke 21:36 says; “Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

Also in 1 Thessalonians 5:6; Thereforelet us not sleep, as others do,but let us watch and be sober
There are many more scriptures that tell us this same thing. Neither Jesus Christ nor the Holy Spirit will be held accountable for our choices, decisions or the lack thereof. We are the ones that will be held accountable for not being good watchmen. For not sounding the alarm or protecting those things or individuals we are to watch over.

So who are we to watch over?
1. Ourselves
2. Our families
3. Our community
4. Those things that were placed in our lives by God to watch over.

Let us take ourselves first. We are to watch over those things that come into our lives that affect our lives. To watch what we take in through our eyes, ears and mouth. So often we hear only about the things that affect our soul, but we must also watch what affects our health. Do we watch what we eat or drink or do we just watch our weight grow and grow with no alarms sounding. Do we inhale things that affect our health and lungs with no warning bells ringing out. Do we listen, watch or read things that affect us negatively. All these things that affect us should stir up the watchman in us and bring us to make better decisions. Yet in many cases it does not, in fact, in many cases all it stirs up are excuses for not doing anything at all. We need to remember that we will have to give an account. Romans 14:12 says; So then each of us shall give account of himself to God (not Jesus or the Holy Spirit)

We also need to remember that we will not be able to make excuses when we are called to give an account. Hebrews 4:13 says;
And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things arenaked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must giveaccount.
The next three are similar so I will speak to them as one. As a watchman for our families we have the same responsibilities that we have for ourselves. We are to watch and protect them from the harmful ways of the enemy of our and their souls. As for our community and others we are to also watch over and give warning of the dangers that they may face based on the choices they are making. With family of course we will play a more active role in stopping certain things from harming our family. We need to teach our children that bad choices bring bad consequences. Proverbs 22:6 says; Trainup a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.

Also in Proverbs 31:26-27; She opens her mouth with wisdom, And on her tongue isthe law of kindness; She watches over the ways of her household, And does not eat the bread of idleness We see that we are to teach them the laws because this is a true kindness for our family. We are also to watch over them and not be lazy in so doing. So why does it say, “the law of kindness?” Since when is the law kind? When is punishment kind? If we teach our children and ourselves that going against God only harms them, others and ourselves then we have been kind to them. We have not allowed them to go the way of the sinner and experience the harm that comes from going their own way. They do not have to learn the hard way what is and is not acceptable to God and society. Luke 15:11-21 show us what bad choices do for us.

Then He said: “A certain man had two sons. And the younger of them said to hisfather, ‘Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.’ So he divided to them hislivelihood And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, journeyed to a far country, and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living But when he had spent all, there arose a severe famine in that land, and he began to be in want Then he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine And he would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods that the swine ate, and no one gave him anything But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger ‘I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants. And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son’………….Bad choices lead to bad consequences every time.

This can also apply to our community and other if they are children in the Lord or act like children in their actions and choices. The difference our children and others is that we can only sound the alarm to this group, because they like everyone else, have a free will. We must be like the voice of wisdom crying in the city as mentioned in Proverbs 1:4 and 21.

(4) To give prudence to the simple, To the young man knowledge and discretion
(21) She cries out in the chief concourses, At the openings of the gates in the city She speaks her words: (22) “How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? For scorners delight in their scorning, And fools hate knowledge.

This of course refers to God who is always calling to His children to try and keep them from the snare of the enemy of their soul. Yet He uses watchmen to convey these words of wisdom and warning. So why should we, as watchmen, care what these people, who are not our family, do with their lives? That is answered in Ezekiel 33:6; But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, and the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes anyperson from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at the watchman’s hand.

We see here that because we are watchmen, we have a responsibility to warn others of the coming destruction of their lives. We may not suffer their consequences but we will answer to God for their death. Also in this same passage we see that this also applied to us. We are to watch out for our own soul, because the blood of Christ was shed for the remission of our sins. If we do not take heed and watch out for our soul then we will answer to God for the blood that was shed on Calvary for our life. His innocent blood was given so that we may have life and have it more abundantly; that we might be called the sons of God. That we might share the gospel of peace to a dead and dying world, so that many may come to heaven instead of going to hell. We may want to say, “I was not called to be a watchman”, but that would be a lie. If you are on this planet, and saved, you are called to be a watchmen. We are to first watch over our own soul and then to all the souls that God has called us to watch over.

Everyone who is called according to his faith has a job to do and a race to complete. Romans 8:28 says; And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called accordingto Hispurpose II Timothy 1:9; Who has saved us and called uswith a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began

Hebrews 12:1; Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us,and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, We are to run the race against time to warn, protect and call attention to that which we have been entrusted with; the message of salvation; to be the light on the hill. Matthew 5:14 says; You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.

But that is not the end of the message. We all have more to watch over than just salvation. We are to watch over others as if they were family, and to train them in the way that they should go so as to avoid the snares of the evil one. As in Proverbs 22:6; to train so they cannot be easily fooled by the evil one. We also must be watchmen over what we have and continue to train ourselves in the way we should go so as not to be deceived along the way. So we can remain the light on the hill.

We cannot be deceived into believing that we only have one small part to play as a watchman. What I call the final part that we play is one of teacher. What I mean is that we are to warn, protect and train others so they can come into the fullness of their calling in Christ.

To then watch them become true watchmen of God and go forth and duplicate what they have learned and to reach the level that God has called them to. To many times the watchmen who came before believed that he was to warn, protect and train but not to encourage others to move forward. Instead they created a position for themselves and a lively hood. This is not the function of a true watchman.

The bible is very clear – we are to train up others in the way to go, not hold them back and tell them to sit and listen and grow stagnant and dependent. Be a good watchman and follow after God with your whole heart and show others the light of truth. Train those you are called to train and then show them the way of salvation. Then train them and show them and encourage them to become the watchmen God has called them to be. Ephesians 4:11;
And He Himself gave some to beapostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers We are all called to be watchmen and to do the work of the Lord. Christ said that we are to follow His example. He was the watchman for the whole world. He warns, protects and trains all that will listen and follow after Him. Should we do any less????

If you have drifted away from God and are feeling lost or out of place in your life it is time to come back and again be the watchman of your soul and life. When we have no anchor in our life we feel lost, lonely and out of place. Christ is always calling to us to come back and establish our anchor in Him. He is the only true anchor we can depend on.

If you are not in Christ or have never committed your life to Christ, now is the time to set your anchor in Christ and become the watchman for your life. You do not need to get right first, do some penance first, or anything else. Just ask Jesus to forgive you and come and be the Lord and anchor of your life. The bible tells us in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (NKJV) Also in John 8:32; “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (NKJV) Know the truth of a solid anchor that will give you what you are looking for. (PEACE) Let the prince of peace share His peace with you. Welcome to the family watchman.
